ECDC Confirms Domestic Spread Of Ceftriaxone-Resistant Gonorrhea In Four Countries
France, Germany, Sweden and the UK are now transmitting the resistant strain locally, no longer just importing it from travelers.
- Cases traced to travel since 2022, mostly from South-East Asia, now transmit domestically inside Europe.
- Extensively drug-resistant XDR strains have circulated alongside multidrug-resistant ones since 2022.
- Every reported case so far has been successfully treated, ECDC says, despite the resistant strain.
Why it matters: Ceftriaxone is the last antibiotic that reliably cures gonorrhea, and no replacement drug exists in reserve.
